American Bulldog History & Information by Daniel Horsley (More Modern Version)
The American Bulldogs is a direct descendant of the original Bulldog that was brought to the new world by the British and Spanish colonists in the south east. These dogs were used for working livestock, hunting large game, and as property protection dogs. These bulldogs have not changed from their ancestors, although their name has changed. Some common names from the past are, “Alaunt“, “Old Country Bulldog“, “Old Bulldog”, “Old Southern White”, “White English”, and American Pit Bulldog”. But the confusion between the names of “American Pit Bulldogs” and “American Pit Bull Terriers” prompted John D. Johnson and Allen Scott to change the name to “American Bulldog” in the 1980’s. Now, most people are aware that the American Pit bull Terrier is what is called the “pit bull” today. John Daniel Johnson and Allen Scott were not the only people to “keep the American Bulldog breed going” as many would love for you to believe. Fact is that there has always been old school farmers and enthusiasts that have simply always had them. After all, Johnson and Scott got their first dogs from the small time farmers and enthusiasts ! American Bulldogs are rarely used in catching livestock anymore, but are used in catching wild pigs. They excel in events such as weight pull and personal protection. They make excellent family pets and love children. American Bulldogs are true working dogs, so they have loads of energy and need a way to exhaust it. Exercise is the key! Due to the history as a true working dog, the American Bulldog has been bred to listen to the master’s commands. So, they are intelligent due to breeding. In general the American Bulldog ranges from (females) 60- 110 lbs. And (males) 75 - 120 lbs. They stand 19 - 28inches tall. Height and weight should be proportional so a heavier or lighter dog is possible. And like many large breed dogs, it may take up to 2 years to fully grow. All colors are excepted, but the only solid color is white (and white is the preferred color). |
